Summer in the Gastein mountains
Bad Gastein is one of 84 municipalities in the Hohe Tauern National Park, the second largest national park in Europe with a total area of 1,800 km².
The national park is one of the last untouched landscapes in Central Europe. The reserve is home to a number of natural features, such as the Tauern window, which gives an insight into the geological history of the Alps and is unique in the world. 266 mountain peaks of over 3000 metres form the crown of this mountain range. The flora and fauna is extraordinary for the high mountains and can hardly be surpassed in its variety and the splendour of its colours. Grossglockner High Alpine Road
The most famous Alpine road leads you into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, to the highest mountain in Austria, the Grossglockner (3,798 m) and its glacier, the Pasterze. On 48 kilometres of high alpine road with 36 bends and a rise in altitude up to 2,504 metres, a natural and driving experience of a special kind awaits you! You will pass through a unique mountain world with blooming Alpine meadows, fragrant mountain forests, mighty rocks and eternal ice, up to the foot of the Grossglockner, the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe.
Rafting
Away to the adventurous and longest wild water ride in the wonderful province of Salzburg! You’ll start the lively rafting tour on the Salzach. It will last about two hours, and you’ll be equipped with wetsuit, boots, helmet, life jacket and paddle, and accompanied by a certified rafting guide.
Golf
The Gasteiner Golf Club, founded in 1960, is one of the traditional golf clubs in Austria. 12 more golf clubs can be found within a radius of 50 km.
Paragliding
Would you like to get to know the Gastein mountains from above? Then you’re in the right place: we are happy to advise you on starting points, courses and tandem flights up to 2000 m above ground level.
Tennis
Tennis fans beware: In the Gastein Valley it’s game, set, and match on 30 outdoor and 6 indoor courts! Tennis lovers, what more do you want?
Climbing
Climbing and hiking are among the most popular summer activities in Austria. Starting with simple hikes and guided tours through to High Alpine tours lasting several days - in the Gastein Valley there is something for every hiking enthusiast and mountain addict.
Wind surfing
The nearby Zeller Lake is an ideal location for surfing enthusiasts.
Gastein healing galleries
Experience the Gastein healing galleries up close! The approximately two-hour introductory programme "Close to the skin" includes a medical check-up (cardiovascular and blood pressure check), an interesting short presentation on the natural spectrum of action of the therapeutic treatment in the healing galleries, and a subsequent trip to the therapy area with a 30-minute stay.
Summer skiing
For those who want to strap on their skis even in summer, the glacier ski areas of Kaprun and Mölltal Glacier are ideal.
