Hohe Tauern National Park the second largest national park in Europe
Bad Gastein is one of 84 municipalities in the Hohe Tauern National Park, the second largest national park in Europe with a total area of 1,800 km².
The national park is one of the last untouched landscapes in Central Europe. The reserve is home to a number of natural features, such as the Tauern window, which gives an insight into the geological history of the Alps and is unique in the world. 266 mountain peaks of over 3000 metres form the crown of this mountain range. The flora and fauna is extraordinary for the high mountains and can hardly be surpassed in its variety and the splendour of its colours.
